Summary

Among those who made pioneering contributions to social welfare in Japan during its dawning was Gunpei Yamamuro (1872-1940), who studied at Doshisha and later devoted himself to the development of the Salvation Army Japan. By shedding light on Gunpei Yamamuro, we hope to enrich our understanding of conscience and conscientious action. We will invite Mr. Masatoshi Tojo, the director of The Salt of the Earth, Gunpei Yamamuro, a movie depicting his life, and try to reveal the way he lived, taking many different aspects into consideration.

Admission free; no reservations required.

Center for the Study of Conscience aims to examine “conscience” in contemporary society and to establish the “study of conscience” as an interdisciplinary academic field through the exploration of its possibilities for application and practice. We also aim to disseminate the research findings in Japan and abroad and to establish a new academic community in the field.
